KeyCarbon (which is the USB equivalent of the KEYKatcher) has an embedded microcontroller and a non-volatile memory chip which record keystrokes and is a very simple device to install and to use. KeyCarbon loggers all encrypt recorded data (56-bit Home, 128-bit Corporate / Forensic). It works with Macs as well as PCs and even works with wireless keyboards! KeyCarbon (or a similar device) should be part of any incident handler / forensic analyst's toolchest. While I don't know if I would use KeyCarbon for monitoring purposes without seeking quality legal advice, it is an incredibly useful gadget for recording your actions during an incident or forensic response.

KeyCarbon is ideal for incident response / forensic tasks because it works with any PC operating system and requires no software installation. This allows you to achieve the benefits of having a record of all typed actions during and investigation / response without running the risk of altering the host machine's state. Because KeyCarbon stores keystrokes in a non-volatile memory chip you can record on one computer, unplug it, then retrieve and save the results on another computer. Because KeyCarbon has a fairly modest price, you can even afford to toss it in the evidence bag at the end of the response if you think your actions are likely to require legal action.

KeyCarbon "Forensic" is by far the best key logger on the market available for forensic investigation / incident response because it has an embedded time/date stamp feature that does not exist any other such device. It is a little more expensive than the corporate model but well worth the money.

Installation

To install KeyCarbon all you need to do is plug it in between your keyboard cable and your computer. The KeyCarbon is ready to record the instant you plug it in. There is no software to install either.

Retrieving Data

When you want to see what's been recorded, simply open any word processing program (Microsoft WordPad recommended) and type in your password. As soon as you password has been correctly entered a menu will be displayed on the screen. The menu gives you the several options as shown bleow. KeyCarbon also comes with a high-speed USB data downloader if retreiving data on your own PC.
